After storytelling, we made crafts <---------
While Andy was using a black marker to color Baby bear's face on the template, I tried to stop him by intuition but I didn't. Instead of stopping him, I asked Ms. Robin, "do you ask your students do not use black color when they were coloring?" She felt surprised and replied "Why? Why not black?" I felt surprised as well. I don't understand why some kindergarten teachers force their children do not use black color in coloring or drawing pictures. It made me remind one of the kindergärtners, Tony, a 4-year-old boy, whom I had taught for one year in Taiwan. He was a trouble maker in most of teachers' eyes but I admired his talent in art especially he loved to create the pictures with black color. He was raised by young parents and suffered abuse some times at home. I am not sure if family background or personality reflects on color preference in children's drawings. I noticed teachers in U.S. play less teacher-center roles and provide more unlimited power in the classroom. For me, giving options and imagination for young learners are concerned as important elements especially in pre-childhood education.
